    1500 pairs of shoes – each one representing a life lost on the roads – will be lined up on the steps of Federation Square Melbourne from 8am for most of the day. A FFF pledge drive will be hosted by Fatality Free Friday patron, Bev Brock and V8 Supercar driver Mark Winterbottom. Also attending the Melbourne event will be representatives from Victoria Police and the TAC.

    There will be plenty of empty shoes to fill in Townsville’s Strand Park on Friday, 28 May when the city marks the road safety day Fatality Free Friday. Three hundred and thirty one pairs of shoes, each one representing the life of a person killed on Queensland roads in 2009, will be lined up in Townsville’s Strand Park from 7am.

According to a KidSafe report in 1998 up to 62% of child car restraints were incorrectly fitted. “These are alarming statistics for parents,” said Karen Merange, CEO of Playgroup Australia. “Parents want the very best for their children and their safety is of the highest priority.     More Australians than ever are expected to take the pledge to cut the road toll as part of the national 2010 Fatality Free Friday campaign launched this week. The award-winning Fatality Free Friday event will be held on Friday May 28 with the aim of making that day completely free from road fatalities. Over the past four years community groups, state and local governments, companies, individuals and even Australia’s V8 Supercar drivers signed the pledge to concentrate on safe driving and road use for the day. “We started with the idea that if we could get people to reflect on their road use for just one day – whether as driver, passenger or pedestrian – we could ensure that no one died on our roads,” said event founder Russell White.     Isuzu Ute is driving the road safety message home with a further commitment to supporting Fatality Free Friday. Fatality Free Friday is Australia’s only community-based national road safety program. This year it takes place on May 28... two D-MAX LS crew cab utes will be mobile promotional billboards for the FFF campaign and will help ferry key FFF personnel and information kits to schools, community events and corporate sponsors throughout the year.     The organisers of Fatality Free Friday, Australia’s largest community-based national road safety campaign, are planning to stage a world record attempt on 28 April 2010 to draw attention to reducing the road toll. The organisers are hoping to attract thousands of Australians to take part in the world’s largest driving lesson that will be verified by the Guinness Book of World Records. “We’re working driving schools from around Australia and asking them to register their lessons with us and if they have spare instructors and vehicles to donate one hour of their time for the world record attempt,” said Russell White, road safety advocate and founder of Fatality Free Friday. “We’re getting interest from people in every capital city as well as a number of regional areas across Australia.
